Businesses find out about new markets at free event

Former council head, turned business consultant, Basil Jackson, told businesses that public sector contracts are plentiful for small businesses at a business event hosted jointly between the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Wenta. The event was held at the Business and Technology Centre (btc) in Stevenage last Friday (19 June)

Basil, who was formerly Head of Highways and Transportation at Central Bedfordshire Council and was therefore responsible for awarding tenders for large contracts, presented a workshop on how SMEs can secure public sector contracts. Other speakers at the event were Pat Smith from UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) talking about help that is available for businesses wanting to export. There was also information on undergraduate placements, apprenticeships and traineeships as well as the various business support services offered at The Business & Technology Centre by enterprise agency, Wenta.

Pam Charman, Chair of the Hertfordshire branch of the FSB said: "It was a fantastic event to which about sixty businesses came and the feedback was very positive. Small businesses need to know how to tender for public sector contracts. We have put pressure on local and National government to promote the benefits to the economy of using small and local firms as suppliers but it is still useful for businesses to know the best routes and systems to this market."
